Pokemon Red: Strategy Guide
So the kids have become obsessed with Pokemon. It started with the trip back to the USA, we didn't really have much to do many times and during those times I'd bust out Pokemon Go. For anyone unfamiliar, Pokemon Go was a huge augmented reality (AR) game popular in 2016. In the summer of 2016 EVERYONE was suddenly playing and catching pokemon, even people who never played the original or never watched the show or who didn't even know what pokemon were. Well, from Pokemon Go my kids learned about different kinds of Pokemon and began to understand the concept of types (i.e. Rock type, Water type, Grass type, etc.). More recently we found free episodes of the original Pokemon show and they really like it. Even more recently we've been playing the 1995 game Pokemon Red. That's the version I think I had growing up, I'm not sure actually, maybe I had Blue. Actually now that I think about it I did have Pokemon Blue growing up, but I'm not sure what's different between Red or Blue. Well, I wanted to write this post as a sort of strategy guide. So far we have been playing and 1) You need to catch at least 10 pokemon even if you don't plan on using them (you need the Flash HM which will light up a certain Rock Tunnel, Flash can be learned by Clefairy and you can get a Clefairy in Mt. Moon) 2) On the whole geodude is OVERPOWERED. The majority of early pokemon have normal attacks which are 50% against Rock (geodude is Rock/Ground type). So just one geodude can take on almost anything except maybe Water type. In that respect, a Bulbasaur is good as a starting pokemon. Teaching geodude Dig was really good too so that against other Rock pokemon you can beat them with that (also good on Lightning type). So far we're only up to the ghost tower. There have been a lot of "well you need this" type of stuff that aren't intuitive. Well let's see how it goes but if we had to start over I would say we should have caught more pokemon earlier, otherwise we're doing really well.
